Neurology and Neurosurgery
Neurology is a complex and critical area of veterinary medicine focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders which involve the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.
Overview
Our neurology team combines state-of-the-art technology, expertise and compassionate care to diagnose and treat a range of neurological conditions in dogs and cats with a goal of improving and enhancing the overall quality of life of pets.
At NiVS, our neurology department sees pets for:
- Seizure disorders: This includes epilepsy and abnormal movement behaviours which warrant further investigation.
- Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD): A leading cause of spinal cord issues and paralysis in dogs, requiring surgical intervention.
- Brain tumours: Diagnosed and treated using advanced imaging and therapies.
- Meningitis and encephalitis: Inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system.
- Peripheral nerve disorders: This includes nerve pain and nerve injuries.
- Congenital disorders: Hydrocephalus, narcolepsy, wobblers syndrome and Chiari-like malformations in certain breeds.
Treatment Options
The neurology team at NiVS provides a range of treatments tailored to each patient’s needs including:
- Diagnostics: CT, MRI referrals and Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) analysis are some of the diagnostics that are performed at NiVS to help with accurate diagnosis of neurological conditions.
- Medical management: Medications are often used to help manage seizures, pain, or to reduce inflammation.
- Surgery: Surgery is warranted for conditions like slipped discs, spinal stabilisations, spinal fractures or brain and spinal tumours. Our neurology team is equipped to perform emergency hemilaminectomy or ventral slot surgeries with an emergency referral.
Our neurology team uses a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating a pet. Often, they will work in collaboration with internal medicine, oncology, and orthopaedic teams to provide a high level of comprehensive care. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that every aspect of the pet’s health is addressed, resulting in better outcomes.
Our team is compassionate and is here to support pet owners through complex diagnoses and treatments. We understand that a pet with a neurological condition can be a challenging journey to navigate and our team provides support and education to pet parents through all stages of this journey.
