Internal medicine is the cornerstone of comprehensive veterinary care and at NiVS we see a diverse population of pets who have complex medical conditions. Our goal at NiVS is to focus on diagnosing and managing complex chronic and acute medical conditions which affect a pet’s internal body systems.
Overview
Client education is at the core of everything that we do and internal medicine often involves ongoing care strategies for chronically ill patients. At NiVS, we ensure that clients are presented with options and are included in any treatment decisions recommended for a pet.
Our internal medicine team uses a multi-disciplinary approach and works closely with cardiology and surgery to uncover the root cause of conditions related to gastrointestinal, respiratory, endocrine, urinary and haematological systems in addition to immune-mediated and infectious diseases.
At NiVS, we use a variety of state-of-the-art diagnostic technology including ultrasound, CT, bronchoscopy, endoscopy, cystoscopy, fluoroscopy, rhinoscopy and advanced laboratory testing to identify underlying conditions accurately and efficiently.
We welcome internal medicine referrals for the following:
- Upper respiratory investigations for sneezing/nasal discharge and epistaxis
- Lower respiratory investigations for chronic coughing/dyspnoea/pleural effusion
- Upper and lower urinary investigations for renal failure, glomerular disease, obstruction, dysuria, cystitis, incontinence, haematuria
- Endocrinology for the diagnosis and management of diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease and thyroid disease
- Gastrointestinal work-ups for chronic vomiting, chronic diarrhoea, weight loss, irritable bowel disease
- Fever of unknown origin
- Anaemia – chronic and acute
- Polyuria/polydipsia
- Weakness/lethargy
- Jaundice
- Hypertension
- Hypercalcaemia
- Hypokalaemia.
